How do you know which photographer is going to be worth portfolio shots?

Hey everybody, OK here's the deal. so how frustrating is it to try to find the right photographer that's going to help you with portfolio shots instead of just pictures. First of when you look at a photographers work, see if its worth your book and if its the style your going for and the path you want to take in the industry; if its fashion, fitness, etc. Also speak to the photographer and ask what they are looking for because most of the time your going to be test shooting so you have to balance 50/50 on what you want to do with the photographer. If most of their work is beach shots than obviously that's what they are good at or prefer. so go with it, think of beach shot ideas that you can do with the photographer that way you can get the best out of the shoot. Also before shooting try to find out what peoples thoughts were when they worked with this photographer; remember you have Alan here to help you! Also keep in touch with the photographer with ideas that you might have so he/she can come prepared with the right equipment. If you guys want to know more or have any questions dont hesitate to contact me and also if you have any ideas that you would like me to talk about, toss it my way and i will do the best i can to give advice and help!!!
